If you live in Thane, you know the daily struggle of traffic on Ghodbunder Road. Traveling to Borivali can easily take up to one and a half hours. But soon, this tiring journey will change forever. The upcoming Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project will shrink this travel time to just 15 minutes. Here is everything a common citizen needs to know about this massive project.
Project Overview

This project is an 11.8-kilometer (10.25 km tunnel & 1.6 km approach) road linking Tikuji-Ni-Wadi in Thane directly to the Western Express Highway in Borivali. Instead of going all the way around the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), the road will go straight under it. It will be a "twin tunnel". This means there are two separate tunnels for traffic going in opposite directions.
Technical Details
Each of the two tunnels will be massive. They will have three lanes each. Two lanes are for regular traffic, and one is reserved for emergencies. To dig these tunnels, the builders are using giant Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). These machines are the largest of their kind in India. They measure 86 meters in length and have cutter heads over 13 meters wide. They slowly cut through the hard rock without causing vibrations on the surface.
Environment and Safety Features
Because the tunnel goes below a protected national park, extra care is being taken. The tunnel will be up to 23 meters below the ground. This means the animals, trees, and the forest above will not be disturbed at all.
Inside the tunnel, safety is a top priority. There will be small connecting paths between the two tunnels every 300 meters. If there is an emergency in one tunnel, people can safely cross over to the other. The tunnels will also have powerful fans for fresh air, smoke detectors, modern fire-fighting systems, and bright LED signs.
Agencies and Timeline
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is managing this mega project. The actual building work is given to a contractor named Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL). The total cost of the project is estimated to be over ₹16,000 crore. The administration expects to finish the tunnel and open it for the public by mid-2028. M/s Hill-TATA (JV) has been appointed as General Consultant for the project.
Current Updates (As of May 2026)
The construction work is moving forward at full speed. In April 2026, the Chief Minister officially started the first giant digging machine. This machine is named 'Nayak', inspired by a strong butterfly found in the national park. It has already started drilling from the Thane side. A second machine, named 'Arjuna', is currently being put together. On the Borivali side, the government has safely relocated residents and cleared the final land hurdles so that digging can begin from that end as well.
This tunnel is more than just a road. It is a big step towards a stress-free, faster, and better future for the citizens of Thane.
