In a major step that could improve daily travel for lakhs of commuters, the Union Railway Ministry has given initial approval for a new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about this important decision. The Chief Minister said the new station will make travel easier, faster, and more convenient for people of Thane.
For the people of Thane, this project is mainly expected to reduce heavy crowding and make daily travel more comfortable. At present, Thane railway station is one of the busiest stations on the Central Railway line, with more than six lakh passengers using it every day. After the new station becomes operational, officials believe it will handle a large share of this traffic. This could reduce the crowd at Thane station by around 31% and lower congestion at nearby Mulund railway station by nearly 24%.
The new station is expected to benefit commuters coming from important residential and business areas such as Ghodbunder Road, Pokhran Road, and Wagle Estate.
The idea for the new station was first proposed in 2019. It will be built on a 14.83-acre plot located along the Central Railway main line. Earlier, this land had been reserved for the Thane Mental Hospital. In 2023, after permission was granted by the Bombay High Court, the land was officially transferred to the Railways.
The new station will be developed as a joint project with modern passenger facilities. Central Railway will handle the construction of the main railway infrastructure, including tracks and platforms. At the same time, Thane Smart City Limited will develop and fund the surrounding facilities, with special attention to improving last-mile connectivity for commuters.
The station is expected to include modern amenities such as a dedicated bus terminal, parking spaces for vehicles, moving walkways, escalators, and lifts to make travel easier and more convenient for the public.
Reaching this stage was not easy. The project faced delays earlier because of a lack of funds with Thane Smart City Limited. To overcome this problem, Thane MP Naresh Mhaske sought financial support from the Union Railway Ministry. Due to these delays, the project cost has increased sharply. The original estimate was around ₹120 crore, but the revised cost is now expected to cross ₹245 crore.
In March 2026, the Thane Municipal Corporation passed a unanimous resolution suggesting that the new station should be named after late Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe, reflecting the city’s local heritage and political history.
Although the project has received initial approval, the actual construction work will begin only after several administrative steps are completed. Central Railway will now prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will include the revised project cost and other technical details. After the DPR is approved and final permissions are granted, construction can officially start. The new station is expected to provide a major infrastructure boost and improve daily travel for the people of Thane.
