The city of Thane recently witnessed a powerful gathering of civic leaders, environmental experts, academicians, and active citizens at the much-awaited "MY THANE, PATH FORWARD" seminar. Co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Thane Suburban (RCTS) and Satish Pradhan Dnyanasadhana College. The event served as a dynamic platform to brainstorm actionable solutions for the city’s most pressing ecological and infrastructural challenges.
The day-long seminar kicked off with a grand inaugural session that set a visionary tone. Chief Guest Shri Sandeep Malvi, Additional Commissioner of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), delivered a compelling keynote address on urban governance and environmental branding. The dais was graced by esteemed Rotary leadership, including District Governor Elect Dr. Nilesh Jaywant, DGN Chandrahas Shetty, and PDG Kailash Jethani, alongside distinguished guests Milind Ballal and Rhishikesh Dole. Highlighting the vital role of educational institutions in sustainable development, Dnyanasadhana Society’s President Mr. Kamlesh Pradhan, General Secretary Dr. Manasi Pradhan, and Principal Dr. Ganesh Bhagure pledged their continued support. Convener Rtn. Girish Ghate effectively anchored the vision of the initiative, uniting the attendees under a common green goal.
What followed was a series of meticulously curated, expert-led panels that tackled Thane’s unique urban ecosystem head-on. The session “Pink Guests, Green Hosts” delved into the conservation of the city's vital mangroves and visiting flamingos, with rich historical and ecological insights from experts like Dr. Prasad Karnik. The focus then shifted to the city's borders with “Our Wild Neighbours,” where wildlife conservationists Kedar Gore and Rohit Mohite unpacked the complexities of human-leopard coexistence.
One of the most engaging discussions, “The Feeding Paradox,” addressed the complex urban dilemma of managing stray dogs and pigeon populations. Featuring TMC Veterinary Officer Dr. Kshama Shirodkar alongside other experts, Dr. Jaya Chariyar and Pooja Gavande. The panel provided a balanced view of animal welfare and public health.
The seminar also confronted critical civic issues. In “Every Breath Counts,” Dr. Shyam Asolekar broke down the realities of rising air pollution and sustainable science. Traffic and mobility took center stage in “Unjamming Thane,” where experts Sanjay Sasane and Sai Malvankar offered practical urban planning solutions. Concluding the technical sessions, “Taps & Truths” brought experts Hemant Jagtap and Dr. Amit Chaudhari together to decode water scarcity and the urgent need for rainwater harvesting.
The flawless execution of this extensive agenda was a testament to brilliant teamwork. Snehalata Deshmukh masterfully anchored the event as the Master of Ceremony, while behind-the-scenes stalwarts like Neela Ghate, Rupesh Gujarati, Rashmi Gurjar, Kalpita Muly and Ashish Moghe, along with the entire RCTS organizing team, ensured seamless coordination. The robust on-ground management by Dnyanasadhana College’s Dr. Mahesh Dalvi, Dr. Babasaheb Kambale, and their dedicated technical staff made the hospitable environment possible.
"MY THANE, PATH FORWARD" proved to be much more than a discussion; it was a definitive call to action. By successfully bridging the gap between policymakers, subject matter experts, and local citizens, the Rotary Club of Thane Suburban and Dnyanasadhana College have laid a strong foundation for collaborative urban conservation. The path forward for Thane is undeniably green, and this seminar has ensured that the journey has officially begun.
