Powering Up Thane: A Greener Commute on the Horizon

Thane is steering towards a more sustainable future with a major infrastructure upgrade designed to support the growing number of electric vehicle (EV) users. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has officially cleared the rollout of 19 new public EV charging stations across the city. This move is set to make eco-friendly transportation a practical and accessible choice for everyday commuters.

Strategic Expansion Under a PPP Model

This initiative operates under a smart Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Rather than burdening the civic budget, the TMC is providing identified land parcels on a 10-year licence basis. Private operators will take the wheel, covering the entire estimated cost of around ₹10.50 crore for setting up the project. These operators will handle end-to-end delivery—from installing chargers and arranging power supply to managing daily operations, maintenance, and security.

In return, the TMC will earn a minimum revenue share of ₹1 per unit (kWh) of electricity consumed at these stations, creating a steady income stream for the city while fostering clean infrastructure. Furthermore, to ensure long-term reliability, the operators are bound by a minimum non-closure period of three years, guaranteeing that the stations will be consistently available.

Where Can You Charge Up?

The locations have been carefully chosen after detailed surveys by the TMC’s Electric and City Development Departments. The aim is to place chargers where they are needed most, covering key travel routes and high-traffic clusters.

Citizens can expect to find charging stations in areas such as:

Central Thane: Including Naupada and Kopri catchments.

The Ghodbunder Road/Manpada–Patlipada Belt: A crucial highway-linked growth corridor.

Pokhran Road Corridors: Serving dense residential areas.

Wagle Estate Belt: Catering to daily office and industrial traffic.

Other Key Zones: Spanning Uthalsar, Rabodi, Kalwa, Kharegaon, and Mumbra.

Benefits for EV Owners

This new network is designed with convenience in mind. A significant focus is expected to be on DC fast charging, making it ideal for quick top-ups for daily users and those travelling through main corridors. User tariffs will follow the central government's guidelines, ensuring standardized and fair pricing.

Additionally, the TMC has stipulated that these sites must be ad-free. No commercial signage or advertising will be permitted, which helps maintain a clean visual environment and keeps the focus purely on utility.

What to Expect Next

With the approvals in place, the project is advancing toward the tendering phase to select operators. Once appointed, the chosen operators will begin commissioning the stations in phases. High-traffic nodes will likely be prioritized to build early usage.

As this infrastructure moves from planning to execution, owning an EV in Thane is becoming an increasingly practical and future-proof choice. For residents, this means less range anxiety and more confidence in making the switch to clean mobility.
