Big Relief for Thane: New Tunnel and Elevated Corridor to Make Ghodbunder Traffic a Thing of the Past
The Twin Mega-Projects: A High-Speed Bypass
To get heavy freight and long-distance travelers off our local roads, the government is building two connected, high-speed structures designed to act as a massive bypass:
The Gaimukh–Fountain Hotel Tunnel: A 5.86-kilometer, 6-lane underground tunnel will be drilled right beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This ensures a fast, direct route from Gaimukh to the Fountain Hotel junction without harming the forest above.
The Fountain Hotel–Bhayandar Elevated Road: From the end of the tunnel, a continuous 9.58-kilometer, 6-lane elevated bridge will soar over the Vasai Creek, taking traffic directly into Mira-Bhayandar.
What does this mean for you? It gives Thane residents a direct, signal-free flight to the western suburbs, cutting travel times drastically!
Overhauling the Existing Ghodbunder Road
While the tunnel and elevated bridge are long-term game-changers, immediate relief is also actively underway. The existing Ghodbunder Road is undergoing a massive physical overhaul to fix the current potholes and bottlenecks. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Public Works Department (PWD), and MMRDA are working on a strict deadline to complete major road repairs. The ongoing works include:
Concretization and Lane Merging: Merging the underutilized asphalt service lanes with the main carriageway to widen the driving space and fully concretizing the road to prevent monsoon washouts.
Gaimukh Ghat Repairs: Resurfacing and strengthening the notoriously narrow and steep Gaimukh Ghat section where heavy trucks frequently break down.
Utility Shifting: Relocating water pipelines and power cables to dedicated corridors to prevent agencies from constantly digging up the new roads.
Officials have set a firm target to finish over 90% of these surface-level upgrades by December 2026. Once done, the metro barricades will be reduced, giving commuters a wider, smoother, and safer Ghodbunder Road.
Between the upcoming high-speed tunnel and the newly concretized city highway, Thane's daily commute is about to get significantly faster and much less stressful!

This will not solve the traffic issue on Ghodbunder road. To solve this permanently we need a separate freight roadway dedicated to heavy vehicles bypassing the eastern express highway proceeding through ghodbunder. This can be envisaged by creating parallel route along the coastal road via Kolshet and linking it directly to Vasai Mumbai corridor without crossing Ghodbunder . But are the planners thinking alternatives?
