Rotary Club of Thane Suburban Hosts Free Eye Camp at Hiranandani Meadows

The Rotary Club of Thane Suburban (RCTS) took a major step toward community wellness by organizing a successful free eye check-up camp at Whitefield in Hiranandani Meadows, Thane. Held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, this initiative specifically reached out to the hardworking individuals who keep our residential complexes running safely every day. The camp was dedicated to the security guards, cleaning staff, house maids, and drivers working within the Hiranandani Meadows complex, providing them with professional medical attention that they might otherwise struggle to access.

This vital health drive was carried out in association with Shree Ramkrishna Netralaya, a renowned super-speciality eye care hospital that has been serving the Thane community since 2003. Known for its advanced technology in robotic and blade-free surgeries, the hospital brought its expert team to ensure every participant received a high standard of care. During the event, 82 people underwent thorough eye screenings. The results highlighted just how important these regular check-ups are, as doctors identified 25 individuals who require further medical investigation. Most importantly, the camp detected 3 cases of serious vision issues that could have led to permanent sight loss if left untreated.

Regular eye exams are a necessity, yet they are often neglected until a person starts losing their sight. For drivers and security staff, clear vision is not just a health matter but a safety requirement for their daily jobs. Many eye conditions, like glaucoma or problems related to diabetes, do not show early symptoms. By the time a person notices a change, the damage can be permanent. This camp aimed to create awareness that simple, timely testing can save a person’s eyesight and their livelihood.

In a generous move to support the community, Shree Ramkrishna Netralaya has announced that they will offer free further investigations at their hospital for all those flagged during the camp. This ensures that the staff members receive the full treatment they need to recover. The Rotary Club of Thane Suburban, continues to be a pillar of service in the city. As part of a global network of volunteers, the club focuses on improving lives through local action.

Both the Rotary Club and Shree Ramkrishna Netralaya have expressed their strong commitment to continuing this mission. They are ready to partner with other housing societies and organizations across Thane to set up similar camps. For those interested in organizing a similar camp for their staff or locality, the organizers can be reached at 9820146432

The Enduring Journey: Thane’s Fort to Jail

For every resident of Thane, the name “Thane Jail” probably brings to mind the present-day correctional facility. But did you know that this site is actually one of the most historic landmarks in our city — a silent witness to centuries of conflict, change, and community life? While Thane has today grown into a bustling metropolis, the old fort — which now houses the jail — along with a few other ancient buildings are the only surviving remnants of Thane’s glorious past. Let’s take a journey back in time to uncover the rich history preserved within its stone walls. Thane Jail did not begin as a prison. Around 1730, the Portuguese — who had ruled Thane since 1533 — began constructing a strong fort to defend the town. Earlier, they had relied on watchtowers and smaller forts, but as their power declined, they realized the need for stronger defenses. However, before they could finish, the Marathas swept into Salsette in April 1737. The unfinished fort withstood two Maratha assaults, but t...
